Educational contributions

The Civil Engineering and Architectural Aerodynamics group contributes to the different educational programs at the Department of Civil Engineering. Group members are involved in regular course work both as main responsible and as contributing lecturers, and in projects on Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. level. Additionally, special courses are given on a regular basis for example as preparation for final projects. We constantly improve our teaching in order to provide the best possible and inspiring education that students develop the necessary skills required in a highly specialised and competitive global engineering environment.

Elements in Education

The content of the educational activities comprise areas in Structural and Environmental Wind Engineering, Structural Design and Dynamics, and various courses on Experimental Structural Mechanics and Testing. Below, the main courses within our educational activities are listed.

The above video (Danish language) is a 28 minutes lecture on general issues of wind acting on buildings, bridges and cities given by Associate Professor Holger Koss, DTU Civil Engineering. The video was produced in November 2010 by the Danish broadcast cooperation, Danmarks Radio - DR2, in frame of the featured series "Danskernes Akademi".

CORE COURSES

Seismic & Wind Engineering11374 – Seismic and Wind Engineering (Jordskælvs- og vindteknik)

M.Sc.-Level in Structural Engineering (10 ECTS points)

The course’s intention is to enhance the engineering student’s ability to design structures against earthquakes and wind, by progressively examining the causes of earthquakes and the nature of atmospheric wind, the principles behind the dynamic analysis of seismic and wind loading of structures, lessons learned from the past and structural repair, retrofit and control.

Experimental Structural Mechanics11331 – Experimental Structural Mechanics (Eksperimentel Strukturel Mekanik)

M.Sc.-Level in Structural Engineering (5 ECTS points)

The course is intended to provide practical experience in using experimental methods to describe and analyse loading on civil and mechanical engineering structures and their response in terms of forces, stresses and deformations. A central aspect is to introduce the students to the corner stones of experimental work, i.e. proper preparation, systematic testing and accurate documentation and analysis. With this course the students should be prepared for tasks in other fundamental and advanced courses or for experimental project work.

Engineering on Urban Scale11994 – Engineering on Urban Scale (Ingeniørdesign i byskala)

B.Sc.-Level in Architectural Engineering (5 ECTS points)

The course is an introduction to sustainable urban design and how engineering knowledge is integrated into the early design process. The parameters are technical and natural scientific analysis of solar radiation, daylight, and wind, and their influence on the urban micro climate and the energy balance of buildings. In addition the student is introduced to understanding of architectural working methods, problems and instruments in the urban context. The complex problems are processed with cross-disciplinary working methods.

SPECIAL COURSES

Introduction to Wind Tunnel testing in Civil EngineeringIntroduction to Wind Tunnel Testing in Civil Engineering

M.Sc./Ph.D.-Level (5 ECTS points)

The course is given for students on Master and Ph.D.-level as preparation for final projects or research work based on or comprising experimental wind tunnel studies. Teaching comprises lectures (history, wind tunnel types, scaling, model design, test setups, data acquisition, analysis and similar) and practical exercises. The students are requested to prepare, conduct, analyse and report four different wind tunnel tests (flow measurement, load with force balance, surface pressure measurement, flow visualisation).

Architectural AerodynamicsArchitectural Wind Engineering

B.Sc./M.Sc.-Level

The wind is one of the main climatic factors influencing the planning of urban areas and the design of buildings and structures. The course is intended to introduce background and methods in investigating wind conditions in urban areas to students in Architectural Engineering. The course comprises lectures and experimental work in the wind tunnel laboratory.
